Who We Are

The Cultural Roots Society (CRS) is an independent 501c3  nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and advancing the intellectual, cultural, and historical legacies of enslaved people and their descendants. Through archaeology, education, community engagement, and healing-centered programs, CRS restores lost narratives, celebrates intellectual contributions, and fosters community resilience.

CRS works with a diverse network of partners, including universities, cultural institutions, museums, and descendant communities, to ensure that the contributions of enslaved people are recognized as foundational to American culture and history. The Society envisions a future where these legacies are honored, studied, and celebrated for generations to come.

Vision

We envision a future where:

  • Historical and presidential sites are interpreted through the lens of descendants, scholars, and archaeologists, revealing the intellectual and cultural contributions of enslaved communities.

  • Descendant communities lead, are empowered, and healed through cultural programming, education, and the collective act of remembrance.

  • The legacy of the enslaved becomes a celebrated cornerstone of the national narrative owned by and for descendants — and is central to America’s identity and humanity.
